I thought I'd take the time this mornin' to let everyone here know what studies are being used to determine the migration of fish up and down the Thames (London ON). I think perhaps some of ya might have similar circumstances and activities in your neck of the woods...
I was readin' the local paper and seen this story about "Wired fish help in dam effect study" (link below). That got me laffin at first and then the more I read, I really got fired up ...
Before I get into the main event, I think I should give ya a history lesson first ...
Dam History: There has been a lengthy dispute regarding a new dam that had been installed in London's Springbank park area of the Thames river. Activists and Environmentalists say the dam has restricted the flow of migrating fish and when closed, it causes pollution and bacteria levels to accelerate to unsafe levels. (The smell alone will have ya gaspin for air). The whole purpose of this dam is to allow the river levels to rise to a point where people can enjoy recreational activities on the water (like Boating / Kayaking).
The city has hired a consultant to wire up about 60 fish with transmitters. The data has been used to determine when to close the dam in the spring. It typically is closed in May to allow the river to rise. The date has now been changed to June 15, 2008. I'm not sure how they determined this date (flip a coin maybe, I don't know).
I'm not sure yet what the so called experts say about the affect the dam has on fish migration either (results have not been released yet). I do know that at the cost of $40,000 per year ($666.67 per fish) to do this study and the cost of installing a new dam and the costs of illness and treatment of the sick as a result of increased levels of toxins ... Well, I think it would be fair to say "Cut yer losses" and blow the dam thing up!Let the boaters find a new hobby like fishin'!
Just thought you would like to know! That's the London Report ~dokdok
Catch and Release, you will be glad ya did tomorrow!
