My girlfriend and I recently moved from st.catharines we are used to deep slow moving blue water, in the grand river in kitchener its very shallow almost 5 feet at maximium. We were wondering if we could get tips on baits ( we r using worms and small spinners / top water baits) because we have cause 3 very small bluegills and a 7" small mouth bass. but we see many small trout or bass but they seem to b under 6 inches.

I fished the river down towards caledonia years ago ..lotsa surprizes in there ..i mostly used a float usullay 3- 4 feet ...i got a few good meals ..
I have never fished up as high as you ,,,but there are a lot of fellows on the board that maybe able to steer you...hope this helps a bit and report in with your adventures and a few pixz if you can ...always great to hear a fish tale
I do have a book somewhere about fishing the grand if i can find it i will put the title here and maybe your local library has it...pretty good read too

well your best bet then is to wait for the spawning run, then use a simple 3 way swivel (the reason for this is the hook with the leader does not have to run through the sinker thus making you able to sense the bite better). a short line , circa 10-25 cm depending on the bottom, use a fluorocarbon leader 40-65 cm in length. Make use of a small hook preferably no bigger than your thumbnail and use berkley gulp dough and mold a small ball (to simulate an egg) onto the hook making sure the WHOLE hook is covered by it (for fruther enhancement use a treble hook and put three or 4 eggs together to cover up the hook). This is the best setup if your not fly fishing, the reasoning is that your simulating salmon eggs during the period that the fish would be spawning (late september onwards) the fluorocarbon makes the line invisible, or near invisible, thus allowing your bait to resemble a natural food source. With this setup you should be able to hook onto a few salmonids and the odd wildcard

for this christmas i am buying myself a fly rod, thanks for the tips i appericate them alot. I have anoher question which colour is best for immitation row? i have green berkly carp dough, red/dark pink row and gold/yellow row, i have never heard of sing a treble hook before ill try it tonight. I recently tried a few leeches that i caught no luck same with a few different water spawning insects, i seen a large amount of top water action it seemed to be trout going after flies of different types. i had one hit with a dragon fly larvee but it was a pumpkin seed sunfish about 5 inches. Havnt tried the mepps yet water level dropped this weekend by about 8 inches so its difficult to move a spinner over the weed beds.

| well they say that 10% percent of a trout's feeding occurs on the surface, the vast majority is on nymphs and the various caddis may and stonefly stages. Nymphing with a fly rod however is a bit harder (well im a purist so i try and avoid strike indicators) but it does give you significant results. For roe bags you should use colours that are more natural, the gold and red and dark pink should work fine.

| sweet thanks, after this chistmas when i buy my fly rod ill have alot more questions for you. I have to say that google satilite maps help find my fishing hole there seems to be a dam about 900-1200m down stream with water depth of around 8 feet but i hae seen medium sized pike around i have top water lures of all types, spoons all sizes, spinners and a good selection of soft baits but ive had 1 pike strike in over 3 weeks of fishing. It was on a orange yellow shallow water rapela, split in two but is connected in the center to make it swim like a real fish. And it was only a small fish any tipss for me? Also along the river there is small pools and inlets i found large numbers of perch, panfish and suckers ive been using worms but petsmart sells crickets of all sizes very cheap these work great too thanks for the tip horsesho it was great!
