After not marking many Walleye last trip out, time to move on. Last trip marked mostly sheephead and silver bass with the very odd rainbow mark and walleye in very small groups. The walleye are starting to show up in their regular fall pattern in the rivers and mouths.

The nice thing about this year is the fish are around longer. Last year the fish left the last week of August.
Last year the fishing was amazing when going for rainbows, we had some days of over 100 rainbows a day. This year I don't think I broke 50 rainbows in a single day.
This year there are more walleye and they are bigger then last year as the 2003 year class has grown to the 5 to 6 lb range, next year those fish will be 8 to 10lbs.
Overall I have had a better year simply because I have been able to get out at least 2x a week with my own boat and really have had a good idea of the fish patterns. This year I have 4 solid lures that are consistantly working while last year I only had one or two.
The bad part of this year is I snapped 2 downriggers and lost a cannonball but that happens on Erie when you have the cannonball 1 foot off the bottom, since the lake has alot of sunken nets, boats etc... Both Riggers were fixed easily. I would rather have them snap off then drag down the back end of my boat.
The funny thing is this year if 3 of us came home with 3 limits of walleye and rainbow then my wife wouldn't even flinch. On the other hand, I was always taking out different people fishing and when asked Dina would tell them that their going to catch lots of fish...lol. This year Dina has let me fish whenever I felt like it .
The fact is Erie is an amazing lake to fish and in fact perhaps the only lake I know of where you will catch your limit most days, the only thing that limits you on Erie are the winds.
Next year you should take a drive down and we'll take a trip out. I should have a better handle on the lake.
This is my second year fishing Erie hard, and I no longer reel in fish, but love watching the excitement of others. You have to experience this amazing lake of ours firsthand, fish it enough and it will spoil you.
You know you have landed alot when the Doctor tell you " you have tennis elbow on both arms". Good thing the season is over as it will take 4 to 6 weeks to heal.

| I'm sure there are some bad fish days on Erie. Looks like not to many though. Great Lakes fishing this year is almost over, time for the inland lakes.

There are very few bad fish days, usually they are the days you didn't locate them.
One thing to note. Lake Erie is getting better every year as there are over 2 million rainbows stocked every year plus natural reproduction. The walleye have rebounded very nicely and with the bait staying in the lake and not being sold as baitfish, I believe the fishing will get even better.
The nice surprise this year has been Port Stanley. Port Stanley is quickly becoming the walleye capital of Erie.

My understanding is the fish will start to migrate now to the Western and Eastern basins and then into the Niagara and Detroit Rivers.
