Well it all depends on how you want to catch em!
You can do a few different styles.
1) You need (minimum)10' river rod, reel with 200 yrd of 12-15+ lb test and an assortment of spoons ect. Throw in a few glow in the dark cleos for night time.....
go to the end of the pier, muscle you way into a spot and start chucking!
OR
2) Same 10' river rod will do fine. same set up other than you are going to bottom bounce.
Set up as follows...line with a fairly heavy egg sinker to a swivel. from the swivel a 12-16" flouro leader to a single hook. On this single hook you can use almost anything from small marshmellows of all colours, to a piece of red yarn, to yellow ear plugs or pieces of sponge...anything that floats!
Fresh roe bags with floats work well....especially brown trout roe...candy to chinooks!
Throw out the line in the middle of the river..tighten you line up and prop your rod up on a stick or rod holder..whichever you have...keep the tention on the line and wait...could be hours and hours...waiting.....then "FISH ON" (yes YELL THIS!!)...OR you could watch the 25lb salmon pull your rod into the river!
Hang on and be prepared to run up and down the river bank, dodging all the ignorant fisherman who do not PULL IN THIER LINES!!!!! (sorry petpeeve there)
PS make sure to bring your own LARGE net!!! you are definalty going to need it.
Hope this helps! (can ya tell I JUST bought a boat...spent alot of time on the riverbank lol )
You can also FloatFish with a centre pin but thats another lesson and lots O cash needed for that.......if your interested let me know!

Ah, well see then you re ready for a centre pin and 14' float rod!!......wait till the salmon have spawned..the crowds have gone and you venture a wee bit upstream (with a few other anglers) and quietly land bow after bow feeding on the salmon roe.
Usually.. these smaller crowds are more respectful of others, nature ,the surroundings ect..... they are all using $400+++ rod/reels vests ect.....its almost like a little secret club these "pinners"are. They all look out for each other, respect the area they are fishing in....(Dont dare ask where they catch fish....unwritten rule lol)
Hard to explain, but there is a difference between one of these guys and the weekend warrior out throwing treble hooks at the spawing salmon.
(Not saying everyone on the piers are tossing treble hooks but you do get some strange ones once and awhile)
I guess you have to see it for yourself...or ask a "Pinner" what he/she thinks lol
Fish On!

Some very good advice dispatcher! thanks. I did the pier chucking thing at Port Credit when I lived down that way. Man the things you see makes your head spin. It can be the darker side of fishing. The good side is it that hooking into a 20 pounder !!
Take Care
