she is already a hard core angler.  even can kick my but in the occasional bass tourney.(by a half pound).  and always does well against me in ice fishing derbies.

Hi Horseshoe; Happy new Year.

My hubby and I fished Lake St John a lot in years past. We used to get on the lake at the the trailer park boat launch at the time. We fished directly out from the launch, and did really well for both Pike and Walleye. We also fished the lake in the summer and did really well in the Pike department but not to good for EYES.

We used to always go after spring Pike in the bay opposite the airport. We both caught our biggest Pike to date there...Hubby's was 22 pounds and mine 14. It was awesome. Just the other day we were talking about fishing St John again but have no idea if you can still access the lake from the trailer park. The airport would not allow access at the time we fished there. It was late 80's. Where do you go on from if I may ask?

We ate lots of fish we caught there and we are still going!!

Catch fish...and be safe.

heading out there rite now.  there is a strip of land acroos from the airport that we access from airport road.  it is public and is used in the summer as aboat launch.  it is the closes to the lake.  another is again off airport road but a much farther walk.  and a third spot is the boat launch at the stepan plant.  not sure about access at the  trailer park.  i have never used it.

Happy New Year to you too forbes and ratherbe....I havent fished st john in yrs. Thanks for answering the access ...i think if i recall we accessed by the plant, there was an open area that u went into and the plant was to your rigth side as u went in that open area. My  biggest pike came out of Quinte near Northport thru the ice ..still swimmin if he aint been captured

Hi Ratherbe;

I know the spot you mentioned (boat launch). This spot is located on the other end of the lake from where we fished, and we never did find it as productive as the end where the trailer part is or was.

We are over in Orillia quite often so we will take a drive to "SINGIN" as we call it and check access out.

Have a great day fishing, and keep safe.

i got a little eye out there this morning and a little pike.  seeing fish on finder but they are in a real bad mood.  don't wanta bite at all.  really really have to finess them.  tiny little jig and a tiny twister took the eye and a jig dipped with a minnow for the pike.  i watched him swim up every time i lived the  minnow and back down every time i dropped it.  had to move it real slow or he would not follow it.  took five minutes to get him to just tap it enough that i could set the hook on him.

all my fishing this year i have noticed that the fish are real lazy.  won't chase a bait.  and if your minnow is to lively they won't even try to bite him.  anyone else seeing the same thing.

that opening  off to your left at the plant is the boat launch i use in the summer.

Hi Rath

Good to hear you caught something. I agree, this past year we also found seriously lazy fish! We fish a lot on head lake in Norland. Big large mouth bass, which we did catch but man it was work! I use tube jigs most all of the time on this particular lake but like I said it was long periods between hits and that was everytime we were out. Unusual for us on this body of water.

We found after a while, the most productive way was to drift fish. I hooked into a big muskie and I am telling you I could not even budge him!! Had him on for about 2 minutes..then gone...those big teeth through the line! No leader on as I was not looking for Mr Muskie but I sure loved that 2 minutes!

I have caught a Muskie on this lake about 10 pounds. It was great fun. I also caught a Wally that same day about 3 pounds. First one I ever caught there. Other fisherperson's fish them exclusivley and are quite successful. It is a fairly shallow lake with lots of weeds and rocks. Good smallmouth there as well, but we prefer Bucket Mouth! If it is a slower day I can almost guarantee if I pitch to the docks there will be a big mouth just waiting!

Anyway, glad you had fun. How much Ice was there?

Take care

last winter was horrible.  no fish.

alot of the derbies i do have atleast 500 people.    150 to 200 fish caught in the three hours we are out there in a normal year.

last year one derby had 4 another had 6.  mostly perch and we had to finess them.  they would not even suck in a pin head.  i don't think any of the derbies got more then 10 or 15 fish.

this winter is starting some what the same.  but i am getting fish.  i can see fish on the finder and they just sit there.  they'll come up bit if i raise the minnow but then drop back down.  spent yesterday out on lake nipissing.  we managed two eyes a pike and a perch.   one  eye hit a minnow soon after i dropped it in the hole.  the rest of the fish we had to watch on the finder and keep trying new technics till we got her to hit.   the pike came out of no where while i was jigging and just slammed it.  the way it should.

st.john has a good 10 to 12".  nipisisng had 14".

I and another guy did pretty good there on Sunday past. Check the other post in help section. That lake is hard to fish most times but the walleye are abundant there the past 2-3 years and getting bigger.
