Looking for some direction on the Saugeen River, Durham:

I have been itching to do some fly fishing in the Saugeen River around the town of Durham with my son (who is currently 8 years old).   Both my son and myself practise catch and release methods using only barless hooks.  I think that it's very important to teach our children about the enviroment, in a fun way to give them good memories, but also about limiting their impact when they're out and about.

There are two areas in the Durham region that I would like to try out.

The first is the Durham Conservation area, which will give us direct access to the river on public lands.  The second is the area west of Durham where the Rocky Saugeen meets up with the Main Saugeen.  I don't think that these lands are publicly held lands but I was wondering if there was adequate public access to this river intersection without violating private property?   I don't want to travel for two hours only to find out that our plans are foiled due to lack of access to the river.

Really appreciate any constructive replies on this inquiry.

Thanks,  Aurora64blue

There are some very good open spots for fly fishing in the conservation area. There are 3 dams in Durham and the conservation area is at the upper dam. Some good holes upstream of the dam and just downsream of the upper dam it goes into a small gorge with some very deep holes.. but the water moves throught very fast and you need a fair bit of weight. After that it opens up and slows down heading to the second or Middle Dam. as for the orther locations, it has been too long for me and I can't remember what is public and what is private.

Hope this helps and Good Luck!

Thanks for the advice Peachy.

I think that I'll start with the Durham Conservation Area and then start scouting around west of Durham.  If you go north of Hwy 4 on the 30th SDRD. (just west of Durham) you'll run strait into the area that I'm interested in.   Just looks too good not to check out.  If it is all private land I'll start approaching the land owners for permission.

Thanks for the safety advice about the gorge.  My son only weighs in at about 50 lbs or so, so I try to find places that he can do some casting in only a foot deep of water.  I gave him hip waiters for his birthday, unfortunately they're twice as long as his legs.  He's a great little swimmer but I really need to keep him as shallow as possible for the five years or so.

Thanks again and have a good week,

Aurora
