A 59-year-old-man is facing a raft of gun charges for blasting two fishermen with a shotgun after he caught them poaching in his private pond.

OPP Constable Larry Plummer said the irate property owner confronted the fishermen at gunpoint after he found them with their lines in the water Tuesday.

They had been angling in Whiteman's Creek -- a popular public fishing spot a short distance away -- before they decided to try their luck in the pond, which had been privately stocked and was teeming with trout.

When they turned around and started to run away, he shot them both in the back with birdshot.

One of the victims made it to a nearby bush, but his buddy was knocked down by the blast.

"The landowner reloaded the shotgun and kept it pointed at the victim lying on the ground," Plummer said in a press release yesterday.

When the man in the bush came back to help his buddy, the gunman assaulted him, Plummer added.

The men fled and called the Brantford OPP.

They were checked by paramedics at the scene and didn't have to go to hospital.

Birdshot can do serious damage at close range when the discharge is concentrated. But the pellets disperse with distance and the victims were far enough away that they weren't seriously hurt.

The homeowner was charged with six counts of breaching firearms regulations, pointing a firearm, assault, assault with a weapon and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose. He was released on bail and ordered to appear in Brantford court on June 17.

too bad they dfidnt have a game warden  or CO they could report it to...no wonder guy protecting his investment.,...not saying its correct but maybe if this province would supply some officers things like that would slow down in occurence...poachers know odds are slim they will be caught or prosecuted so they do as they please...the honest fisher trying to report a poacher cant even get an officer to attend and then they want you to get all the info for them including a picture of the offence with the face , offence and id marks all in the smae picture...and  if you did that you'd still be lucky to get a conviction ...be some way off of charge and scot free...oh oh i am getting wound ...best go sit in my corner for a time out ...that and gasoline....grrrrrrrrrrrr
