Over the years i have used several portable heaters for on the ice and inside my fish trap hut. The first one i used was a Coleman similiar to this but they dont even show the one that i did have.
I had that a few years and found it to be poor in an overall sense ...so off i went an came across a radiant heater that looked like this , I could use it in the open to take the chill off and keep my hands warm and it worked ok in the hut as well but would almost or did heat me out of the hut. Sure kept the skim ice off the holes tho.

Recently I had a friend do some service work for me in an area 22 x 25 ...its a cool area so i tossed the heater on to take a bit of chill out of the air. as he was working he handed me a device said have a look ...i did ..it was a CO detector ...the reading was 17ppm. thats getting up there pretty dam high. The heater had been running for 1 hour and was still climbing. So we shut the heater off and continued to watch till the tester had peaked ...19 ppm .. well well whats that tell me or anyone...so i'll use it in the open air on the ice but sure as hell i aint gonna use it inside my portable hut anymore...

Well thats brings me to the search ...what brand what btu's where do i get one ..now i gotta research and at this point i have come up with this unit for inside the hut.

The big questions is will it do the job ? is it to cumbersome?.does it have enough BTU's ? Have any of you used it and would reccommend it or say its a waste of money? or would you reccommend something else ? Input appreciated ! thanks

I have the Mr Heater as shown in the 3rd picture... I understand it has a sensor in it that shuts it off if a lack of oxygen is present (ie: more CO than O2). It worked great and keeps the hut warm....

I was also given a little coleman catalytic heater... its not as powerful but I've used in the garage... never thought about the CO levels using it in a tight hut.

Thanks for posting this topic. I have been looking at new heaters as well and was wondering if anyone knows anything about the Coleman ProCat?

I have a Cat Eye by Colman. it takes the chill off but sure doesn't keep you warm in my trap.  Keeps the ice off the lines and the hole open and is a good size for transportation.

I usually fall back on my single burner propane stove. Smll burner just attach a single propane cyliner to. Throws lots of heat.

Have no ideaa what the Co2 readings would be.

Sudsy  ( Sudsmaster) has the mr. Heater you've shown in his 2 man igloo and it's a treasure. really warm even on cold days and, as stated has safety tip-over and a co2 shut-off sensor. not cheap, but, a great little heater. my 3 cents! glen

Hye Greybear thanks for the info ...i dont mind spending a few bucks so i can go out again i just hate wakin up dead...:X.. so unit is good ..does he find it cumbersome,,,i walk with my fish trap hut so i would have to put it inside the sled ( tub)  portion. Do you think it would toss off enuff heat to warm hands etc in open air like i use that radiant heater on the propane bottle ?

Thanks for your help , I am kinda leaning towards that unit
