I am seeking opinions and advice. I am a senior citizen who doesn't feel old. I love fishing and one of the things I like most is the ever changing technology and techniques. Monofilament has always been my line of choice, mainly Berkley XL or XT. The only variable was the strength. My son has started using braided line and is tipping it with flourocarbon leaders. My questions are do many of you have a preference. If Braid what kind and strength. How and when do you use flourocarbon. I am trying to glean as much knowledge on this topic as I can. My fishing is fairly ecclectic, mostly I fish bass, walleye, musky and pike. In the spring and fall I will downrigger for Lake Trout or salmon but use separate rods for that. Lastly what is a good knot for joining flourocarbon leaders to braid or mono. Thanks for reading, I will appreciate any response I get.

Hi Larry, I use braid now and tip it with florocarbon. I mainly am trolling on the big lakes or am jigging. I don't think I would cast with braid or troll in areas where there are logs because the line has zero stretch. It is not a good downrigger line but it is an excellent line for using dipsy divers but make sure you use a snubber. To join braid to mono I make two loops like when tying a hook, then do 7 twists to the line and then feed the end through the loops and through the big loop and slide the line down, I think it is called a trilene knot but not sure.
Hope this helps

Hi there, speaking of trolling for Lakers... what is a good speed and is there anyway to get down to them without down riggers?
I'm new to Lake Trout fishing, hoping to get on Simcoe over the next two weeks.
Thanks for the help!
Cheers,
David
