I can attest to applying fly floatant in frigid temps. I use it on the first ten - fifteen feet up from my float, as that length is on the water the most. Also, the top six guides get a coating as well as my float itself. I have to de-ice my gear roughly 4 times less than applying nothing ( for example, if it takes three drifts before having to de-ice my guides, line and float, I would get an average of 12 drifts using the floatant before going through that frustrating process). One thing to keep in mind with using any solution (floatant, petroleum jelly, Pam, etc), reapplying in cold temps is key. I bust out the floatant every hour until it's above zero. It is a tedious process itself, but it helps out four-fold.
