Hello! I am new to the boards and am hoping you folks can help me out a little. I am predominantly a bass fisher, and while I do troll sometimes, I am mostly fishing in rivers and smaller bodies of water. Last summer when I was experimenting I bought a cheap setup - $50 for rod, reel and line. Now, I am looking to upgrade, and have came across a world of products. So i'll pose a few questions and hopefully you guys can help me out.
1) What is the best reel for the kind of fishing I am doing? How is a "baitcasting" reel different from other reels that people use?
(I have been looking into various Abu Garcia and Shimano reels. All I am trying to do is increase my cast which is currently underpowered)
2) Do I want to use normal line or braided line? What kind of line should I be using?
3) What kind-brand of rod is best-suited for the type of fishing I am doing? How long should it be?
I am one of those guys who fishes everywhere, so my setup needs to be relatively versatile. For Instance, a week ago I was in Dunville reeling in Channel Cats, A few days ago I was Walleye Fishing in Lake Erie, and yesterday I was in the Grand River near Elora fishing for Browns.
Thanks for your Help in advance folks!

Hi Billsthebassman and welcome to go fish ....nice to have you wid us ...from what ur saying u need to have a few rods set up for a specific task ...dont rush out n buy 4 today ..get one this year and one next or ask Santa for some specifics and fathers day not to far ..opps best i say this now ...dont ferget men ..MOMS days is loomin so put ur caps on now ... nyways pick out some stuff u like add it to your wish list for family members ...or pals...if ur fairly new to fishing i'd tend to stay away from a baitcaster ...u can get in a mess real fast if you dont know how to use but once ur on to them i think you'll love em ...they wind flat around the axis as opposed to a spining thats wind around the axis and moves in and out ...heres a baitcaster

heres a spinning

Hope this werxz now
lines are a funny thing what i like you prolly wont ...some use braided with mono leaders ...all sorts of ways and rodsssssss omg thats a whole new zone this is nice and thats nicer ...its all personal feel and how it handles ...usually higher end werks nicer but now and then u find a low end thats great ...over time u will come to decided that u like a diawa theory spincast on a fenwick 7 foot med action with 6 lbs berkly sensation kinda thing ...pretty tuff to say go get this .,,,,go in the shops on a rainy day and play and feel and chat to clerks u pick up info fast
Good luck ..Horseshoe

Thanks again Horseshoe. I have decided on a spinning reel for sure. Most people I have spoken with have suggested a 7' rod or so, but yeah, I will go into a local store and test some stuff out.

Bill stay with the spinner but use a med to heavy action rod with 15 lb test line mono with low dima:
You have to pull them out of the weeds or keep moving your boat back and forth.
While watching fishing show keep an eye on where they are fishing. On the out side of the weed bed fishing in. So If they dont have the power in the rod then you loose gear or keep moving your boat in and out of the weed bed .......................
Only my 2 cent

Hey Red,
Thanks for the tips. I think I've settled on one of two reels:
First Choice) Shimano Stradic 2500
Second Choice) Shimano Symetre 2500
After that I think I am going to get a Med-7' Rod. Any suggestions on the brand?

Hey Horseshoe,
re: CARROT STIX
Now that I'm in the market for a new rod ... I was lookin' to get 2 different set-ups ... (1) for crappie and bass and (2) for Pike and Catfish / Carp.
You may have already posted this somewhere on the site but I was wondering if you or any of the GFO members have ever tried or bought the CARROT STIX and if so, How do you like it?
I'd also like to get a nice Baitcast rod and reel. Something similar to the baitcaster reel that you have posted with a matching rod ... I'd prefer a longer rod (somethin' strong enough for those large London carp I plan to catch from shore!). Any suggestions would be appreciated ... Thanking you in advance ~dokdok
